This film is a piece of cinematic brilliance, Ron Howard's direction from the Thomas Eidson book was very good. Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett (Go the Aussie's) at the least deserved a Oscar Nomanation. The supporting cast in Evan Rachel Wood, Aaron Eckhart and that Creepy Witch Doctor, were acted beautifully. The Script was very good and would have taken along time to re-invent the old indian language. All on all, minus the gore, this is a very good and old-fashioned western, that will keep you on your seat and keep you thrilled for the whole two hours. Enjoy.

It wasn't bad, but being an average north American teen my atention span isn't very big, and I was easily bored with the first hour.

The only intriguing thing about this movie is the surprisingly evil Indian sorcerer. A very scary caracter... the rest of the movie is boring and pointless.

I thought this movie was Ron Howard's lame attempt at a western. Seemed very long and somewhat laborious. Nearly every scene was filmed behind or near a fence or obstruction (weird cinamatography) Good bad guy though.

Very good. Kept me entertained through the art of storytelling... as opposed to giant special effects that are largely forgetable and replaceable within any movie.

Very misleading trailer. Very, very violent (which would have been fine if I had been prepared for a feel-bad, crappy movie about a serial killer) Many groteque scenes which leave nothing to the imagination. Predictable, mediocre plot which does not even reward the audience with a typically satisfying ending. Don't waste your money and take a nap instead.

This was a great movie. It demonstrated bad vs. Good medicine, but those who don't understand about such things might not 'get it'. Bad medicine, or wishing harm on others is rampant in the modern world, in all societies. If we become more aware and spread the good stuff around, we'll see more peace. Well done movie. Ron Howard has never disappointed me.

Well, not much to say about it, really... except that it was tedious to sit still and watch the movie until its very end. It is long, boring and not credible at all. It hits rock bottom with that big crappy shaman voodooism scene. I just couldn't believe that a fine actress such as Cate Blanchett would accept to play in such a bad flick. Pity. And what to say about that annoying, ugly indian shaman except that he made me laugh of derision every time I saw him. I'm sorry, but this movie's only purpose would be to help you waste your money if you'd want to do so. Ciao, people. :)

Cross Ransom with Dances With Wolves and you get The Missing. Unfortunately, this could very well be Ron Howard's worst movie (I never saw Ed TV, so maybe that was it) The Missing starts off interesting enough, painting a beautiful, majestic picture of the American West circa 1900, and letting us get to know the characters before tragedy strikes. However, the film soon dips into repetition and hocus pocus, electing to place credibility on BS witchcraft. I know there were, and still are, so-called practioners of this sort of thing in the world, but it's all psychological, playing on people's ignorance to make them think they are cursed. You can't make someone sick by fondling their hairbrush from twenty miles away. This element removes any sense of realism from the movie and turns it into a fantasy. Not that I have any problems with fantasy films, but here it just doesn't belong. By the time the climax comes around (if you can find it), you'll be so damn drowsy you won't even care if they ever find the little brat. SIX! And that's being generous!

I liked it! Tommy Lee is my favorite actor. The plot was different than the run of the mill western. Tommy Lee didn't become a rocking chair babysitter at the end. The womans man didn't suddenly appear to save her from those dastardly injuns. Some humor, and good connections between the actors. Great scenery. We have travelled in that part of the country, and tried to relate. (We missed by 100 miles. Entertaining movie.

A predictable one. I enjoyed the performance of the youngest daughter. They are constantly mixing Spanish with the native language of the indians and for a non-Spanish speaking person it may sounds like the north-american indians spoke Spanish!!!

Great movie. Not for the antsy or juvinille who can't sit through longer films. In response to the other reviews; it was a bit slow, but ultimately, it's not an action movie. The "Hocus Pocus" junk was not that unbelievable, and was easily dismissable as timely natural phenomena. Racism? This is a period movie, people were racist back then, don't let it insult your modern values. You can't make a credible movie about slavery if your characters are politically correct, same applies here. Overall, it's the first western that has true depth to it, good character, and subplots of 'coming of age' and family woe. Definitely a 10..

This movie was clearly one of the best I've seen this year, rising above an endless bombardment of bland and uninspired sequels, truly in the top 3 of 2003. The acting was superb, and the characters were well developed. Even the action in this movie remained realistic. I loved the themes of clash of cultures and acceptance I found resolution to be most appropriate and heart-warming. For all that did not like the movie I would say you're far too cynical or pretentious but then again perhaps you envisioned this being a picture with more senseless violence as the trailer may have led you to believe. And for those who were "offended" by the movie's "racist" undertones... I look forward to the day when viewers can look past the minor inaccuracies and technicalities of a historical fiction and enjoy the movie for what it clearly is. Clearly this movie did not try to offend anyone so your complaining is obviously a cheap attempt at taking away from it's credibility. Go see it... Now.

Okay, before I went to see this movie I read a bunch of posts here to get a general idea of what to expect. WEll I got something to say to all those who said that this movie was racist... yeah your right it is... but you also have to realize that the way this movie portrays Native Americans is EXACTLY how they were treated back in 1885. They were seen as savages and inhuman. Now with that out in the open, I'm giving this movie a 9 because the only complaint about it was the length... just a bit to long to be sitting in a theatre chair, but other than that it was great. Cate Blanchette and Tommy Lee Jones were great with their parts.

How could Ron Howard make a movie this bad. The commercials made you think it was a supernatural thriller but it was not! It was a western with a run of the mill story at best. The bad indians were VERY one dimensional, typical hollywood rubbish.

It's tempting to say there's something missing in ''The Missing'' but the real problem is, there's too much. Ron Howard has taken a basic, clichéd, western action picture and peppered it randomly with undertones of familial dysfunction, sorcery, sadism and race in an attempt to make it seem profound. Instead he makes it dull.

The movie was flat our racist. In typical Hollowood fashion it chose to concentrate on the "Wild Savage " image of North american Natives. When if fact europeans commintted atociries on North american native that are on par with the Halocost. It is a shame that these peole are portrayed in this manner it wil influence young audiences into thinking that these values are correct. As far as a movie- hollowood doesnt stray to far from the typical formula.

This was a great movie with a very disturbing undertone. It combines a delicate balance of reality and myth and exposes the dark side of humankind. At times it can be a little slow but I strongly recommend you see it in the theatre. It felt like Blair Witch meets Clint Eastwood. It's a very serious movie so don't see it if you are looking for a regular shoot 'em up Western flick. There is a decent amount of action for you meatheads out there.
