Not something most people would enjoy seeing, but the overall filmmaking here is great. The performances lead by Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanson are incredible. Although this movie is very condensed, director Sofia Coppolla has done a fine job with this. It is humorous, light-hearted, and eye-candy for moviegoers. It is unjustified and doesn't have to be, this is Hollywood at it's most insightful, being able to give us a visual of a prolonging sense of true thoughtful emotion. Most good movies have solid transitions, every image in Lost In Translation is moving and dramatically powerful.

A great movie!!! Very European-like perhaps for an American movie, so it may disturb people who prefer thoughtless movies, but the acting is superbly done and the story very interesting.

Yes yes, the acting was good. That doesn't mean the movie was good. A can of creamed corn can pull off a very convincing portrayal of a can of creamed corn; that doesn't mean I want to watch it run around Tokyo for an hour and a half. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the artsy-fartsy; I liked The Madness of King George and that movie was slower than a Saturday Night Live sketch. But can't we all agree not to like artsy films just for artsiness' sake? One last comment: As a man, I can unequivocally say that there is no way a man like Bill Murray would be offered guilt-free sex with someone like Scarlett Johanssen and turn it down. Though, if this movie was supposed to have taken place in an alternate dimension where this kind of thing DOES happen, why didn't they just say so?

This is a superb movie about two disaffected people connecting in an unusual way. They understand the limits of their relationship and do not push it beyond the point that it should not go. One feels that their ability to touch one another at subtle levels will sustain them.

A huge disappointment! Painfully obvious points hammered home endlessly, as in most films of this genre. Maybe it's me: I neither enjoy nor need to be reminded about how sad life can be sometimes. Sheesh, what a dog - save your money or put it to better use, say, buy a lotto ticket where your chances are a million to one against getting anything for it..

Horrible horrible movie. There was basically no plot at all, and the acting was disgustingly bad. I advise no one to even think about watching it.

I am definitely part of the 'loved-this-movie' club in a big way! I went to see Lost in Translation not knowing a single thing about the movie (didn't read any reviews, didn't even know it was set in Japan! ) Now it is one of my favorite movies. Definitely one of the best Bill Murray has ever been in. I was deeply moved by it. Having traveled to Asia a few times, I identified with Murray in every way (absolutely LOVED the scene where he's trying to hold the conversation in the hospital lobby... comedic genius! ) Anyone who has ever had their heart broken or has been in failed relationships (c'mon, let's see those hands) would also identify with the powerful emotions brought out by Murray and Johanson. I thought this movie was wonderfuly acted by the both of them. Finally, I thought the film was a fantastic tribute to the modern day Japanese culture. It really is like that! I think Sophia Coppola is a very very gifted director, extremely efficient at producing raw emotion from so little, and that she is not some [...] riding the coattails of her father's legacy as many here are suggesting. This is a real movie! True storytelling at its finest. Give the explosions and cliche dialogue a rest, ok? It's a bit played out.

Anyone who had anything negetive to say about this movie, obviously isn't a deep thinker. Look deeper in life, and deeper into what wasn't said within this movie. The story is everything that is unsaid, and thus to explain it to you would be lost in translation.

If you like Bill Murray's subtle sarcastic humor, he's at top form here. What does one want in life? The questions are raised here between 2 unlikely new friends in foreign territory. It's a sad movie, touching upon those feelings you have when you want something more.

Both peaceful and chaotic, joyful and sad. This film tells a wonderful story. If you're in the mood to relax and see a "real" life scenario that's unique and gratifying, then this is definitely a great choice.

Just to answer those who asked what was the point of the director: showing the intensity of the feelings that can come out of a relation ship between two persons who know they'll never see each other again. They're lost (it's in the title) for many reasons (a boring life for her, a wife who doesn't love him anymore), they meet in a crazy but fantastic city, and they heal each other for a while. Plain and simple, with wonderful pictures and nice music. As to the Japanese, they're not viewed as stupid: they're just viewed as a foreign (and american) eye would see them. Welcome into the matrix... of true human feelings.

This is an excellent movie, but obviously not for everyone. What struck me about the movie was the wonderful sense of being inbetween two points of peoples life. It had understated photography that would be missed by some, and Bill's acting was perfect for an unhappy, out of place man. Certainly a fine movie to watch if you are alone or with people who can appreciate a slow movie that is not about action.

This movie is made more in french movie style. In such films you will never find any action or stupid jokes. It's about life, about real situations and that's why I liked it very much. When I was watching it I didn't want to stop it, I wished it continue like true love story. There is already kind of the same french movie with Juliette Binoch and Jean Reno. So the idea is not new at all. But still very nice.

At first I thought it was a comedy because of Bill Murray. I almost missed such a good movie. Hopefully it won so many price so that it caught my attention. Really well written and directed movie with a surprising performance by Bill Murray. And Johansson is lovely and played her role right. The movie succesfully transmit the feeling of being a outsider, of being confused about your surrounding. And it is also a touching movie. Just watch it!! Have to watch it alone to enjoy it.

I did see the movie, it did not meet my expectations. I thought it was going to be somewhat of a comedy. Not really! Very boring, after seeing the whole thing, I still didn't know the point of the movie was. A very depressing movie, Not even nearly a comedy at all. I don't know what all the hype was about over this movie. I could have fallen asleep quite a few times during the movie.

I don;t get the peopel who say this movie is boring. It is exquisite. And so true. Two people who meet, have a ocnnection, with the possibility of never seeing each other again at their departure. Bill Murray is just. Scarlett Johanssen is so hot. I fell in love with them both. So you take these two peoepl and stick them in an 'unlkely situation'. Subtle hilarity ensues. Mostly it's amusing, sweet, real, and best of all it could happen to anyone. Sophia Copolla: so hot right now.

Honestly when I heard critics claim that Murray should win the oscar (over Sean Penn)for his performance, I thought this is ridiculous! I had to rent it and see what the fuss was all about because no one deserved the oscar more than sean penn did. The fact that Bill was nominated for an oscar in a LEAD ROLE for this movie is really an insult to rest of the nominees in his category. Don't believe me? Rent the other films. The movie was terrible, seen better acting and cinematography for that matter, got an oscar for the mere fact of the coppola name..

If this is supposed to be one of Hollywood's best? Good grief!! How torturous must the worst be? Scarlett Johansen played the same wordless part as she did in 'The Girl with the Pearl Earing', but at least there they had to come up with costumes and sets. Apart from a good idea of what Japan looks like, these were two of the most boring people I would hope never to encounter. Aren't there any writers left in Hollywood that can put a script together, with dialogue? Longing, languid looks can only go so far before you start to snore. Stay home, take a nap in a comfy bed and save your money.

Every channel on tv seemed to be praising this movie at one point. That is what led me to believe it was worth seeing. Whoa, was I wrong! This movie has no redeeming qualities - no, not even the beautiful Japanese scenery. Bill Murray has been praised for his acting in this film. Excuse me, but that was Bill Murray acting? I've seen more life in NASA's Mars photos. And as for the story... there was a story? Face it, the only reason anyone had anything to do with this film was because Coppola's daddy still has some pull in tinsle town. Don't go see it, don't rent the video, don't watch it on tv. That's the only way people will stop making movies like this. Shame on them. And shame on me for seeing it..

Visually pleasing. I just seemed to get a sense that this was a movie made on the fly without thought or coherence and was subsequently spliced in post production into something molded to look as if there was some surreal meaning on loneliness, purpose, alienation. It's a terrible movie.

The "ugly American" travels to Nihon for a $2M paycheck. While there, the Nihono people and their culture, become the object of his dry wit. I wonder if Ms Coppola would have found it equally as amusing to make fun of her ancestral Italia and those poor non-American soles that are misfortune enough to reside there..."Lost in Translation" should be used as a tool for 'how not to produce movies.' Boring, meaningless, bigoted celluloid junk. Ms. Coppola owes the Nihonjin and the rest of us, Gaijin who paid to see her collection disjointed scenes, an apology and possibly a refund.
